Can you introduce yourself, please?
My name is Roxi Basa, I am a digital artist from Paris, but now based in Amsterdam.I use 3D as my main medium to craft ethereal, whimsical. I have always been a dreamy child, lost in my thoughts and seeking a way to express myself. Now, I work by creating the imaginary worlds that are in my head and bringing them to life using various 3D software.
What drew you to 3D creation, and how did you first become interested in creating experimental fantasies and ethereal worlds? Describe your style pls.
Before discovering the world of 3D, I was a photographer, and during the lockdown, I was searching for a way to stay creative and keep telling stories through my images. That's when I discovered 3D art, and I was immediately hooked. Being confined to my home, I wanted to break free from the limitations and explore new artistic avenues. 3D art offered me a limitless digital space to bring my visions to life. I could create surreal landscapes, fantastical creatures, and unique scenes, all without the constraints of the real world. I loved the control it gave me over every detail.
Who is your biggest inspiration for your art?
I draw immense inspiration from various sources, and cinema holds a special place in my heart. Filmmakers like Dario Argento, Satoshi Kon, and Wong Kar-wai have left a profound impact on me, particularly their masterful treatment of colors and compelling soundtracks.
Anime and manga, with their captivating storytelling and imaginative worlds, are a constant wellspring of creativity for me. They ignite my imagination and challenge me to think beyond conventional boundaries. In the realm of visual arts, Jerome Bosch's paintings resonate deeply with me. I am also a huge fan of the work of Ernst Haeckel, the pioneer of ecology.
Nature is obviously another essential source of inspiration for me. I love to wander through the forest and observe. The moss growing on a tree trunk, a snail strolling on a plant, a cluster of mushrooms, and so on. Through my work, I strive to connect this natural world with a fantastical realm and the technological advancements that define it. As an artist, I believe that inspiration knows no boundaries. It's a fusion of experiences, feelings, and observations from all walks of life.
What do you want to achieve with your art?
In the heart of my artistic expression lies a deep desire to tell stories that leave a lasting impact on the viewer. I aim to create narratives that provoke a wide spectrum of emotions, trigger cherished memories, and evoke powerful feelings within those who encounter my work.
Can you tell us about the creative process behind one of your most recent projects, and what inspired you to create this particular experimental fantasy or ethereal world?
The genesis of each of my pieces typically starts with a powerful emotion I'm eager to convey. These feelings can be inspired by a nature walk or the emotions experienced after watching a film. It's an organic process where the story emerges naturally from within. There's no set formula; instead, I begin with an initial moodboard, conduct research, and delve into the realm of trial and error. My creative process is driven by intuition and experimentation.
How do you stay motivated and inspired during the creative process, especially when working on longer projects?
For me, self-care and personal growth are vital aspects of my creative process. I believe in the significance of taking time for myself, stepping away from ongoing projects to engage in personal realizations. This practice allows me to recharge, refuel my creativity, and gain fresh perspectives.
Through personal projects, I liberate my mind from the constraints of specific assignments, exploring ideas and themes that excite me on a deeper level. It's a delicate balance, as overcommitting to a single project can be counterproductive.
How has your style and approach to 3D creation evolved over time, and where do you see it going in the future?
My artistic journey has been an evolution driven by a sense of natural discovery. From the early stages, I sensed a distinct style that felt inherent to me. However, what has truly evolved over time is my technique and my approach to creative expression.
As I immersed myself in the world of digital art, I eagerly embraced new software and tools, constantly seeking to expand my skillset. Learning to manipulate these digital tools opened up endless possibilities and broadened my artistic horizons. It's a continuous learning process, and with each new technique I acquire, I feel my storytelling abilities grow stronger. In the future, I envision myself continuously growing as an artist, refining my skills, and exploring new ways to express my creativity.
What advice would you give to someone who is interested in getting started in 3D creation and wants to create experimental fantasies or ethereal worlds?
There are no shortcuts or hidden secrets, and though it may sound cliché, consistent practice is key. I firmly believe in the power of daily practice, if possible. As an artist, continuous growth requires a passion for learning. Expanding our knowledge and skills drives us forward. Embracing new techniques and tools keeps us open to endless possibilities. And, of course, seeking inspiration from the most diverse sources, drawn from the real world. To stop looking at the work of others on your phone and instead, venture out of your cave to visit museums, libraries, or parks.
